RIGHTS AND CONFLICT

Students can gain NCEA credits while taking social action through the 40 Hour Famine. This resource can be used in senior Social Studies classes or with student leaders outside of class to enhance their leadership experience.

40 Hour Famine participants: NCEA Level 1 (Years 10-11)
This free Rights and Conflict unit supports teachers as they teach and assess the Level 1 AS91042 Report on personal involvement in a social justice and human rights action (Social Studies 1.4) for students participating in the 40 Hour Famine.
 
The Level 1 unit contains:

  • Student task worksheets and information sheets (updated 2019) to deepen understanding of the achievement standard and how conflict affects people, with focus on South Sudan
  • A teaching sequence with guiding notes for suggested lessons
  • Ready-to-use digital and print assessment materials to save teacher time, including an assessment schedule with exemplars.

 

40 Hour Famine leaders: NCEA Level 2 (Years 12-13)
This free Rights and Conflict unit supports teachers as they teach and assess Level 2 AS91282 Describe personal involvement in a social action related to rights and responsibilities (Social Studies 2.4) for students organising their school’s 40 Hour Famine.
 
The Level 2 unit contains:

  • Student worksheets and information sheets (updated 2019) to develop understanding of human rights issues facing people affected by conflict, with focus on South Sudan, and guide students through organising the 40 Hour Famine 
  • A teaching sequence with guiding notes for suggested lessons
  • Ready-to-use digital and print assessment materials containing two options for tasks (report-style or question/answer) and an assessment schedule with exemplars.
