Students can gain NCEA credits while taking social action through the 40 Hour Famine.
World Vision’s iconic hunger units have been updated and redesigned for 2020. Your students can now learn more about the connection between hunger and climate change, with a focus on the rights of people affected by extreme climate events in Malawi.
These units cover achievement standards for NCEA Levels 1 and 2 social studies, with a special focus on social studies concepts, human rights and social action.
40 Hour Famine participants: NCEA Level 1 (Years 10-11)
The Who’s Hungry? unit supports teachers as they teach and assess AS91042 Report on personal involvement in a social justice and human rights action (SS 1.4) and helps students make the most of their 40 Hour Famine participation, such as Year 11 and Year 10 social studies classes.
40 Hour Famine leaders: NCEA Level 2 (Years 12-13)
The Hungry4Change unit teaches and assesses AS91282 Describe personal involvement in a social action related to rights and responsibilities (SS 2.4) with two assessment options – a report or Q&A. This unit enhances the leadership experience for senior students and leaders organising your school’s 40 Hour Famine.
Both units contain:
- Student worksheets and information sheets to deepen understanding of the achievement standards, issues of hunger and climate change, and how the issues affect people’s rights and responsibilities.
- A teaching sequence with guiding notes for suggested lessons.
- Ready-to-use digital and print assessment materials designed to save teacher time, plus an assessment schedule with exemplars.
